How Fast Can An M1 Abrams Tank Go?

M1 Abrams Tank

The M1 Abrams is powered by a 1,500 shaft horsepower (1,100 kW) Honeywell AGT 1500 (originally made by Lycoming) multi-fuel turbine, and a six speed (four forward, two reverse) Allison X-1100-3B Hydro-Kinetic automatic transmission, giving it a governed top speed of 45 mph (72 km/h) on paved roads, and 30 mph (48 km/h) cross-country.

With the engine governor removed, speeds of around 60 mph (97 km/h) are possible on an improved surface; however, damage to the drive train (especially to the tracks) and an increased risk of injuries to the crew can occur at speeds above 45 mph (72 km/h).

I served on M-60 tanks (old diesel piston engine) and drove them at 55 mph on dirt roads. I’ve seen M1’s going 70 on paved roads. Not sure where you get your information, but well….nuff said.

You would break the M60 or M1 Abrams going both your speeds.

The M60 was capable of doing 48 kph without problem, while the Abrams (At least the M1 variant) was able to do 72 kph before it had some problems.

Again, I am not saying those tanks can’t do those speeds, but over a period of time doing those speeds, it would be very bad for the engine and the tank its self.
